BRATTLEBORO, Vermont (Reuters) - Some have appeared naked in a downtown parking lot. Others rode their bicycles or simply strolled the streets in the nude.

Teenagers in the quaint Vermont town of Brattleboro are raising eyebrows this summer with brazen displays of nudity.

So far they haven't been arrested or ticketed: public nudity isn't illegal in the town of 13,000 people, unless it's done to arouse sexual gratification.

I just had to post this.

Innocent or malicious (their nudity, that is)?

Neither, it's just for attention which isn't innocent (they know what they are doing) but it isn't malicious (it doesn't hurt anybody else). I used to think the nudity taboo was terrible, then I got older and realized most people (likely including myself) are ugly so now I like it :)

It depends on what they look like!

The world should have a Nude Day, just to get this whole issue out into the open.

"We have a nuclear power plant a few miles away and a ridiculous war in the Middle East, countries getting bombed," said Ian Bigelow, a 23-year-old who had gathered with some of his friends outside a bookstore. "So why's it such a big problem if we chose to get nude?"

Typical youngsters, trying to take attention away from the real horror going on in this nation: the shocking erosion of traditional moral values.

I'm reminded of a recent exchange in my local newspaper. A lady had posted a complaint that each morning around 6AM while she was sitting on her back porch drinking her coffee, a neighbor would step out onto his porch naked to smoke a cigarette. Some of the responses over the next few days were of moral outrage, "how dare he do that" and "you should call the police." Other responses were of the practical nature, "put up a fence" or "drink your coffee a little earlier or later in the morning."

From what I've seen with my 2-year-old son and with my coworkers, if you make a big deal out of a behavior it will become more of a problem. If you ignore it, it will eventually go away.

If folks would just ignore the naked teens, simply be treating them like they were fully clothed, they'd eventually stop.

I'd think it would matter if she were upwind or downwind of the smoke...LOL

Some of the commentators were of the opinion that her right to sit on her back porch drinking coffee didn't trump his right to a naked smoke, since both were occurring on their own private property and out of view of anyone else but each other and the spy satellites.

I suppose I would fall on the side of just randomizing the coffee-drinking time, drinking coffee indoors, or putting up a fence. My general view on life is "live and let live" anyway.

I actually belong to a 'Naturist' group, so I am pretty much used to walking around in the buff. But I disagree with the right of people to do this anywhere they feel like doing it.

We have to respect other people's rights, and that right includes not being exposed to or offended by actions that are not acceptable by common community standards.

Suppose that I were a person that swears a lot, and loudly. Should I have the right to impose my speech on others, in a 'regular' setting such as a restaurant, in the process offending them and disturbing their freedom to enjoy life. Of course, it also goes the other way, and they should not have the right to demand that women wear skirts only, with pants not allowed.

If people want to walk around naked, that should be their priority, but in the right setting.

unbound, I am sorry, but that is one right that neither you nor anyone has. No one has the right not to be offended. If more people understood this, there would be less of the moral police in this nation.

Having said that, I go to the front page of newsvine, and of all the stories, I clicked on this one. Damn, I'm a friggin pervert!!

Dear god! Not children seeing naked people who aren't performing any lewd acts! That would just be horrifying! What could it lead to!? They might *gasp* start viewing their bodies as beautiful things to be celebrated and respected rather than shameful necessities to be hidden and deplored!

Done for attention, eh? Sounds like typical teenage rebellion to me. Technically, I'd say you could get 'em for disturbing the peace or haul them in for distribution of lewd materials (namely themselves), in reference to the "kiddie pr0n" mentioned in earlier comments.

Seriously, if we don't want people forcing religion of politics down our throats, should they force nudity upon us as well?

I agree with you in some aspect, unfortunately it isn't all that simple. There may some that would look with malicious intent, rather than amusement over what kids nowadays do....

I would be more worried about what might happen to the nude teens, than what would happen to the people looking at them. I don't think anyone of them has gone blind yet from looking at some naked peoples...

                      Brattleboro...

I went to a music composition camp in New Hampshire when I was in high school. Every weekend we'd take a trip into one of the neighbouring towns to shop and remind ourselves that there is a world beyond staff paper. Brattleboro was one of them.

The dorkiest guy at the camp--the guy who talked a little like the scientist on The Simpsons, the guy nobody wanted to talk to, the guy I felt so painfully sorry for--used to make my roommate's skin crawl by saying "BwATTLEBOWO!"

I always knew there was something weird about that town...

You know, I think it's really cool that all the police chief had to say about the nudity is that it "is really pushing the limits" of the town's laid-back attitude. What an awesome cop. And there are definitely fewer than fifteen towns in Vermont that have banned public nudity. What an awesome state!

                      Freedom and Unity!
